Great Wall Youth Orchestra : ウィキペディア英語版 | Great Wall Youth Orchestra
The Great Wall Youth Orchestra is located in Oakland and performs world music on traditional Chinese instruments. The Orchestra was formed to accommodate "graduates" of the Purple Bamboo Orchestra, and interested students from throughout the Bay Area are welcome to audition. Both orchestras were founded by Sherlyn Chew. Student members range from elementary to high school age and play pieces that reflect their high level of skill in playing their chosen Chinese musical instruments. The orchestra rehearses on Saturdays under tutelage of musicians, who are expert in the various instruments, and plays at many concerts throughout the year. Some of the music played by the Orchestra was arranged by the late Mr. Pei Kun Xi. == Instructors == There are various instructors in the orchestra specializing in different types of instruments. Mr. He Cheng Liu is the instructor of the plucking section (pipa, ruan, and zhongruan). Mr. Xian Lu is the Chinese flute instructor. Ms. Lu Peng is the hammered dulcimer instructor of the orchestra, Mr. Tao Shi is the Erhu instructor, Mr. Wang Peng Guo is the sheng (mouth organ) instructor, Mr. Albert Yan teaches percussion, and Ms. Lily Li teaches the cello.
